Today, I would like to welcome author Emma Michaels as a stop on her Tribute Books Tour for Owlet: Society of Feather #1.
The First Iris Drawing
While I did many different pencil
sketches, the first true drawing of Iris, back when her name was
still Serenity (and she still had long, dark hair), was done when I
was nineteen. It wasn’t my best sketch, and it was done rather
quickly, but it has always stayed with me. Even through numerous
moves I managed to keep this sketch, and it has served as inspiration
for me during the evolution that Owlet has gone through.
The sketch portrays the strange,
wide-eyed girl that continues to fascinate me. I have watched her
dream, face hardships and be forced to discover the truth about her
life when no one would help her. I’ve been right there along with
her when she has experienced tragedy and I feel that I have learned
as much about her through my drawings as I have writing about the
world that she lives in.
While over the years the way I have
seen Iris has changed, originally she loved dresses with jeans and
had a face that might have come out of one of the old portraits when
eyes were wide and cheeks were thinner. In the picture, she has one
foot in the ocean and is sitting on a piece of drift wood on the
island that became her Never-Never. I framed the image with briar
thorns and ivy that I had always imagined growing along the side of
the house from her dreams.
For me, drawing has always been a big
part of my life and served to not only inspire me, but to help bring
to life my stories. While I would write, I would also draw. I saw the
worlds I visited in writing come alive through my drawings. Although
Iris has undergone many changes in her evolution, she continues to
inspire me in my writing to this day.
